Ay Papá scores for Panama in Clásico del Caribe

Fernando Jara added another big win to an outstanding season when the rising star rode Ay Papá to victory for his native Panama on Sunday in the $300,000 Clásico del Caribe (Caribbean Derby) at El Comandante in Puerto Rico.

The 1 1/8-mile race was for horses bred in countries belonging to the Caribbean Horse Racing Confederation and culminated a very successful Serie del Caribe (Caribbean Horse Racing Series) weekend that included four additional stakes races.

Masterfully ridden by Jara, Ay Papá chased pacesetter Criador, a contender from Puerto Rico who led for most of the race. Ay Papá took control of the race with 100 meters remaining to score by a half-length over Mexico's Dobil Yack.

Ay Papá, a chestnut Proud Truth colt, completed the distance in 1:53:02 over a sloppy track.

Dobil Yack rallied from well off the pace to finish 4 1/2 lengths clear of Criador, who held for third.

"I have been very fortunate to win some big races this year and I am extremely happy about that," said Jara, who rode Jazil to a win in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Invasor (Arg) to three Grade 1 wins, including a victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (G1) on November 4 at Churchill Downs.

"But this one is special because I'm winning for my country and for some very good people from home who helped me a lot when I started my career back home," Jara continued. "They are like family. I feel so overwhelm and I can tell you this victory ranks among the top ones for me."

Ay Papá is owned by Stud Angel C. and was bred by the Fernando Eleta's legendary Haras Cerro Punta.

On Saturday, Miracle Man won the $100,000 Copa Confraternidad (Confratenity Cup) to give Jamaica its first-ever win in the series. A four-year-old colt by Law of the Sea, Miracle Man is a Joseph Duany homebred.
